HP Omen W253DX – 17″ Gaming Laptop

The Omen W253DX is a powerful laptop, created by HP and released in the middle of 2017. It has a buffed design that is a bit heavy, but if you are looking for a gaming laptop that’ll support the latest games on it, then it’s the perfect option for your needs. For the price of $1,459, it’s one of the best in this currency range.

It may not be the most beautiful in terms of design but the hardware is totally worth the price, as it undercuts its rivals. The top-notch hardware features a highly capable Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 with 8GB graphics, backed up by a quad-core Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, clocked up at 2.8GHz with 6 MB cache. The RAM storage is also very high, coming at 16GB DDR4.

Design and connectivity

As I said, when it comes to design you will find better-looking gaming laptops. It’s a bit heavy, which makes it uncomfortable to carry around. The total weight of the laptop is 3.35kg and it it is extremely thick on the sides, leading the competition in this aspect with 34mm size. Not only in terms of build, but the color scheme is red/black, making it look even more aggressive.

On the front, you can see the 17.3-inch display with 16:9 ratio and the slightly thick bezel frame on the sides, but we have to bear in mind that it’s a gaming laptop, so it won’t be thin and luxury looking. The HP logo is also there, located on the bottom lid in the exact center, like most laptops. The backlit keyboard feels and looks great, with a comfortable place for your arm to rest next to the big touchpad.

Moving to the back, the first thing you see is the shining in red OMEN series logo in the center of the lid. The surface has a matte gray color and when swiping your hand over it, you can feel the grip it has and how the roughness, which makes it harder to scratch or to slip while wearing. It’s 3.35kg, so you can easily happen to lose handle and drop it – that’s why the grip surface is.

Connectivity is better than any of the OMEN series by far. s. On the new model, the ports are arranged more evenly on both sides with a heavy focus on the left-hand side. USB ports are available on both sides but the two USB ports on the left side are very close to each other. Generally speaking, spacing and arrangement have been improved, and smaller ports are more frequently found next to larger ports.

Performance, hardware, and display

If you are a gamer fan, searching for a powerful laptop that’ll easily support the latest games out there, then the HP Omen W253DX is the right model for you. On the inside, its powered by an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1070, 16 GB of RAM, a 256 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD, which seen as numbers will catch your attention initially. It’s not good only for gamers, but for people who use it for basic stuff or work/study related projects. It will surely have your back in anything performed on it.

As is very common for notebooks, the Omen’s speakers lack bass. The Omen seems to favor mids in particular, and at least managed to produce traces of detectable bass thanks to its large chassis. Maximum volume is okay, but I’d recommend you use mainly headphones, as the drivers are supporting and producing high-quality voice, which adds to the further gaming experience and games that require stealth skills and noise-cancellation.

The battery level on this model is fair, but I have to admit that from HP vastly lied on the battery life performance. Most users give bad reviews about the battery life, which is claimed to be ~12 hours, as it only lasts averagely ~7 hours. We can’t expect more, considering that it’s a gaming laptop and will spend more time plugged in, because of the power-requiring hardware inside.

When it comes to display performance, there are no particular cons about it! The 17.3-inch matte 120 Hz IPS panel supports Nvidia G-Sync. Since G-Sync and Optimus are mutually exclusive, the Omen 17 lacks support for the latter. It is covered by a shine-reducing surface, so you won’t happen to get interrupted by light popping in your eye while playing. As expected of an IPS panel, viewing angles are very good. Naturally, the brightness is somewhat lower at acute angles but colors never distort and the panel remains readable overall.
