Huawei Mate 10 Pro Can Drive A Porsche On Its Own

Just picture a Porsche Panamera being driven by itself and by “itself” I mean with the help of just an external smart device – a smartphone. Doesn’t it sound cool just by imagining it? Well, to be honest, this idea is now a reality and the head of the operation is not one of those overhyped smartphones, but it surely gained a lot of attention throughout 2017.

The smartphone that does the whole thing is a Huawei Mate 10 Pro and the Chinese giant company set up this experiment to show off the processing prowess of the flagship phone’s Kirin 970 chip, which features an artificial intelligence engine, being able to operate a car on its own. The concept of this phone was unveiled in October 2017 and started selling just a few weeks ago. What brought up this idea to reality, was the curiosity whether the phone is smart enough to read objects on the road like cars, dogs, passengers and other different props.

How long did it take to create it?

Huawei showed its teamwork, creativity and great spirit by making that project come to live in less than 5 weeks. Their concept of self-driving car does not include all those futuristic looking radars, depth sensors and etc. The Chinese biggest smartphone company decided to go with the Panamera because it was still not a self-driving car and they saw great potential in it.

All the technology that is used for the self-driving method is a high-speed camera attached on the roof of the car, that captures everything quickly and transfers the video content directly to the phone. Therefore, the phone reads it and decides what command to give to the mini robots that operate the gas, brake, and steering. Kerry, who is a developer, created an app with a simple user interface, allowing you to tap a button on the phone to get the car going. Sounds simple right?

At what point is the project right now?

As I said above – it took Huawei 5 weeks to make this idea come to life. It would be impossible for such time to create a flawless system and to tell people that they could trust a self-driving vehicle that was made overnight. For now, the process is still in the middle but I see great potential in it!

No other car out there has this kind of concept of self-driving. It is both highly functional and simple, which is key nowadays! I believe that the project will turn out to be awesome in just a few years – props to Huawei! At this moment it could drive with low speed but during the tests, the results turned out to be great! It was really able to distinguish whether people ran in front of the car with different signs or all the different objects placed on its road.

It is even able to tell whether a man with a bicycle was in its way while going with 50 km/h. This kind of speed is the limit at most public areas in Europe, which shows how great this project is! As soon as the Panamera got close to the cyclist, it quickly changed its way and safely passed the rider.
