Is Overcharging Bad For Your Smartphone?

It is a little chance that you haven’t heard the advice “Don’t overcharge your phone…it’s bad for the battery”, but is it all true? it sure is true that you should not use it while charging, as it may turn crucial to your battery life, but is overnight charging really a downhill for the battery lifespan?

This is what urges us to write this article – to answer this eternal question in the best way possible. From now on you will know whether you should charge your phone through the day or leave it on the charger while you’re sleeping and start your day with a fully charged smartphone!

Is overcharging killing your battery?

Charging your device fully has been always considered bad for your battery, no matter that phones are smart and disable the charging when the battery hits 100%. However, there are different opinions on that. Some professors say that you should charge it as much as you can, so you can keep the battery constantly charged and working. This may be good for people who use the phone constantly and quickly run out of battery.

Others say that you’d better charge it to 90% instead of 100%. There is no chance to “overcharge” as I said that the smartphone disables the charging session when it hits 100%, but it is unhealthy for what’s on the inside of the battery, professors claim. When you fully charge it, there are certain reactions that cause the electrolytes to degrade, which makes the battery less efficient.

Which method is right?

Actually, both claims are right and it all depends on your needs and preferences. If you are using your phone most of the day, then you’d better go for the 100% charging and don’t overthink it. It may harm your battery slightly, but it is not doing it at a significant rate, so you wouldn’t destroy the battery in a month or two – it is not that harmful. If you are one of those people who spend 18 hours a day on the phone you will most surely go with the tendency and change it in the course of 2-3 years. If that doesn’t happen, then you’d invest around $50-60 into a new battery and you’d be good to go.

However, if you are not using your device that much, then you’d better stick with the second option and try to charge it between 30-80% and don’t go for the full charge. This way you’d have a well-stored battery and charge it once per 2-3 days – that’s the best option if you want to keep it 100% healthy! Another good advice is to shut down all the apps that you don’t use, which operate in the background and use some slight amount of your battery. Why keeping them on if they don’t serve you?
